I do. I'm weird like that. I can spend hours and hours organizing in my sewing studio. What's up with that? I could be sewing. And I do sew. But it seems that when I pull out fabric and notions and other "stuff" that I need to organize, it motivates me, gets my creative juices flowing, and before I know it, another quilt or purse or "something" is in the works. I'm OCD like that, but you already knew that. The funny thing is that I may have a pile of papers a foot high that need either filing or shredding or just plain throwing out, but oh boy, my sewing studio is another story (Kinda like my pantry = alphabetized= sick).
Tell me about yours. Tell me what you like to organize or if you hate to organize. I'm always trying to find the most "user friendly" way to organize mine. What I mean by that is I do have a fabric stash. A LOT of it is old from when I started quilting back in the early 90's. But I still love it. It's still good. It's quilt shop quality fabric, so why would I dump it? I'm not. *oink* It's great for some of the charity quilts I like to do.
I've organized my fabric a dozen ways and change it up all the time. Sometimes I have it organized by color. I always try to keep my "lines" together just in case. Sometimes I have the other organized by theme. I'm so cORNfused. A little help here, peeps. If you help me out, I may have something special to share tomorrow. No, I WILL have something special to give away tomorrow. ;) Just sayin.....
Sooooo c'mon. Share your wealth of wonder with me. I respect your opinions. I love y'all more than my sweatpants (not saying more than my luggage because I hate my luggage LOL). And if you're REALLY good and give me some ideas, I promise to show pictures. In the meantime, I'm heading in there to work now. YAY! I LOVE DOING THIS! By the way, there will be painting going on when I finally get things like I want them. Help will be requested, so put your thinking caps on. Here is an old picture to give you an idea of what's up. (By the way, this is only a fraction of the stash.....THAT is the problem). I will be doing some pattern purging, etc., so guess who gets to reap those benefits? hmmmm????
Love y'all more than.......well I love ya a lot! LOL

I just did some organizing over the weekend - but your post (very pretty) made me realize I forgot to organize my solids! Gotta get going on that. check out my post at cometarrywithme.blogspot.com where I show my FQ stash, if you have a minute or two.
Looks like a mini studio with mini bolts! I have no ideas or solutions as I'm in a bind concerning my space too. :-)
Well, you just put my idea to shame. But, I'll share it anyhow. I just organize my lil ol stash by color. I take my fabric and use a nice 4" wide ruler to fold it over so that they are all the same size. Then I pull the ruler out, and pin the fabric nice and neat like. I stack them all together. Now I have a drawer in which I toss small itty bitty scraps in case I have a project that might call for pieces, I don't wanna waste anything. Applique will call for bits, and I don't have any yet, so I'm starting to save them. I have a shelf saved for big bits of fabric that wouldn't fit on my 4" ruler.. yeah not much there except for muslin. And up on top I have a jellyroll that I won. It is special!! On display :)
I use clear tote drawers to organize by color.
Oh my, I could really use some help myself! I have an Ikea unit called Expedit -- the 5x5 grid -- with a storage cube in each space full of fabric. Florals, batiks, asians, kids & novelties each have their own cube, with the rest sorted by colour. Whole bolts are in drawers under the bed, and scraps are in large Rubbermaid totes. But all my newest purchases are stacked everywhere!
I love to sit and organize and reorganize my fabric stash, as well as the rest of my house. My husband jokes that he is going to wake up in a container neatly labeled 'husband'. I do not have nearly enough room to organize my stash though. I sew in the dining room. Yours looks awesome and I am green with envy.
Carolyn, please take a roadtrip to Virginia! You can organize my cross stitch fabrics! LOL
I think your fabrics looks fabulous!

I live to organize. Space is an issue for me so I store everything in bins. I agree that re-organizing held get the creative juice flowing again. Someday I'll habmve a sewing dream space :)
I organize what I like. I love my stash and so I am always playing in it and re-organizing the fabrics, charts and threads. I love my collections so I do the same with them. Bills, papers, dust ... not so much!
All of my fabric is organized by color except for a couple of lines I am making plans for.
I have a set of about 4 inch high by 13 inch wide cubbies where I keep my WIPs. I also keep scraps of coordinating fabric in the cubby too...you know, just in case.
I keep all of my pre-cuts in a drawer together for the day that I get brave enough to actually take the ribbon off.
I have all of my scraps in separate bins organized by color as well.
I find that organizing by color allows me to get away from the pre-matched lines and create new and interesting palettes.
I was watching the Big Bang Theory and saw Sheldon folding his shirts and socks with the Flip and Fold. I immediately told Mr. Genius that I wanted...no needed...one for Christmas. If he knows what's good for him, there will be one under the tree that I intend to experiment with for folding my fabric. I think it will be fantabulous!!!

My favorite way for YOU to organize... is to send what you can't think of what to do with... to me. LOL See I can post on your blog. :o)
i sort by color, folded to fit my cupboards ... red, pinks and purples in one section; white, grey and black in another; then, yellows, gold and browns; all greens; all blues, one yard and more. i♥applique so fqs and big scraps are sorted where i can see them and little scraps are in bins. wip's are sorted according to stage [i love cutting kits]boxed or hung.
all this because my craft room is SMALL. i try to resort periodically ... i pull out stuff to use and bring in more that is stashed whereever it's easiest to stash [it's just that i love to handle this stuff]
Send it to me and I'll organize it for you!
Think about how you use your stash. Do you tend to mix and match lines of fabric? Do you have a line that you know you're going to use together? Organize thoughtfully like that. I like that you have your solids together and I'd probably keep Christmas, halloween, etc fabric together as well as background fabrics. My tendency for me would be to keep lines together but that's me, it might not be you. I *definitely* like the mini bolts!
Looks like a regular fabric store ya got there. Sorry I have no new/better ideas for organizing - no matter how hard I try, I've not been able to figure out how to do it!
I like the way you have your fabric - so totally impressed with the way it is currently. It does look like a fabric shop. My only question - do you have it all entered into a computer program? I doubt your home owners insurance would cover in the event of a natural disaster. You may want to document your stash.
I love, love, love to organize. I have a huge amount of stash as well and every time I organize it is like I just went shopping all over again.
How do you get your fabrics to stand up like that on the shelves?
Mine stand up or lie down just fine. I buy lots of bolts!!! Have to show pictures...Just made some big changes and need to get things put away first.
Yes, yes...I love to organize...but...I have to be in the right mood, and then I can go all day. I wish I had the fabric you do. Or the space.
I need to organize badly. My stash has taken over my dinning room. I could use your help. LOL!
I love to organize...and reorganize. I've done my fabric a number of ways, including wrapping it around the little boards but found the boards took up too much room and didn't leave enough room for more fabric. :) Now I have it folded, by colors, sort of. It invariably gets turned topsy turvey when I'm searching for something. I don't suppose there's a perfect way but if theree is I'd love to find it! blessings, marlene
Who are all these people who love to organize, and how can I get them to come to my house ?!? I have one closet with shelves full of neatly stacked fabric sorted by color. That was all good until the closet SHRUNK when I wasn't looking! Maybe it happened when I was at the fabric store LOL. Now that my closet runneth over, I use clear bins and just embrace the chaos. Sorry I can't offer any help, but it looks to me like you've got this organizing thing down pat!
I like to organize but I'm not always sure which is best. Now I have the precuts together in their catagory. Charms, FQ bundles, Layer cakes and jelly rolls, each on their own shelf. The large pieces for backings are on a separate shelf wrapped around cardboard and smaller pieces are folded on the shelves. I also have 5 bins of other catagories because I'm a horder and have too much fabric, but I am happy.
I love to organize but I dont really have a designated space so its kind of all over. I want to get some shelves and do what you did with the mini bolts. I have fq and smaller in clear bins by color. If you do scrappy quilting you could sort by size. like strips in differferent widths, fq, etc. Let us know what you end up with.
When can I come play in your stash :) it's beautiful!
Although my amount of stash does not even come close to yours . . . I LOVE organizing it!! I am an organization freak actually. Your room looks fantastic!!
I am so like you - I love nothing more than to empty my stitching unit, then repack it again. I tend to do this so many times but get great joy in doing it. Its lovely looking through the stash you have. Your fabric is so well stored xx
We organize multiple ways too - and there doesn't have to just be one way. Older fabrics that are "scraps" or yardage go by color into shallow clear plastic bins. Collections that will be used together are stored in drawers. Projects go into some type of container (boot box, or clear plastic container). Then, to be stored scraps from completed projects go into clear baggies/shoe boxes until pull the big bins. Kits go into their own project boxes. We don't try to fold everything nice nice because scraps have been cut. Oh! and odd fat quarters go into a fat quarter clear box (we don't have many of these). We normally don't acquire precuts other than fqs. The few we have are stored in the drawers as well since will use them together. And, we have a box for "backings" as use wide backings when we can. Most of the fabric fits into the hall linen closet (no linens in there - we have linen storage in each bath). Hope this helps. However it is easy for you to find stuff is the best way to store.
I love organizing too, I think it makes me feel like I've accomplished something that makes me feel good.
I organize by "Like items" in my home but organize by color in my closet and sewing room...ahhh nothing like a day of putzing and organizing to make me feel wonderful!
