Picking your brains! HELP!

I have several questions I'd like to ask my readers so that I can make my blog a better place and one that y'all want to come and visit.  I'm not trying to win any kind of prize for the most followers, as I know that some are just followers because of the giveaways (and that's okay, too!).  I want you to REALLY enjoy my blog and want to come back to it.  Sooo, in order for that to happen, I want to know what you want to see.

First of all, do you like giveaways?  I've read lately on some blogs that they really don't like them.  I guess I'm clueless about that, as I love to enter them myself, although I very rarely ever win.  I love getting some pretty fabric or notions, etc. in the mail for free...but that's me.  I do understand not having to jump through 10 hoops to be able to enter.  I usually only ask that you be a follower of my blog and of the person that is sponsoring the giveaway.  The other entries are purely extras if you want to do them.  I will never ask for your first born.  LOL

Second:  Do you enjoy guest speakers or do you just want to have me write on here?  Sometimes I do enjoy guest speakers on other's blogs, especially if there is a tutorial involved.  I'm always wanting to learn something new.  Other times, I don't really care for them.  I guess it just depends for me.  What are your thoughts?  Yay or nay.

Remember, nothing you say on here is going to hurt my feelings (unless you tell me my blog sucks.  Then I may pout for a day or two!  Just constructive critism, please).  I'm truly trying to make it a better place.

Thirdly, do you want to hear about me, family, etc., or just mainly creative, crafty things?

Fourth, do you only like blogs that have a lot of pictures ?  Do you turn away from a blog post if there are NO pictures?  Sometimes I've had things to say to you that really don't involve a picture, but I hesitate to write them because of that.  I know most love to see pictures, but sometimes the subject matter doesn't really warrant one.

Fifth, I want to talk to you like I would talk to a friend sitting across the kitchen table from me over a cup of coffee, tea, or a coke (yum).  Sometimes I'm a bit...wonky.  Borderline smart a** at times (I've kinda sorta hid that part from you).  Tell me...I want to know you and I want you to know me.  :)

I read each and every comment that comes across my blog (they make my day.  I know, I need a life!), and I do try to answer them, but sometimes it doesn't happen.  I will be trying really hard to do better in the future on that.  I do, however, usually click the link to your blog and read up on you.  I love getting to know new people.  I feel the internet has been a wonderful tool in making our world a smaller place.  I cherish my overseas friends as I do the ones that live in my same state or town.  I am close to my online friends (if not closer) than I am to my friends in "real life".

Sometimes I don't have access to a camera, which has hindered me from posting MANY times.  Do you like pictures of my studio and how I organize it? (I am a bit of an organizing freak and love to organize things! ) Does that bore you?  Or are you more interested in the things I've made or others have made?

I know these are a lot of questions, so just pick and choose the ones you'd like to comment on, or pick none if you want.  I want my blog to be for YOU as well as it is for ME.  If you aren't enjoying it, I'm wasting my time.  I'm not trying to make the big times with my blog....no way.  It's a way and a place for me to vent at times, too.  That's another thing.  When I'm down, I always hate to post in case readers think it's a downer blog.  But we aren't always in perfectly happy moods, are we?  Should we stay away from our blogs at that time, or reach out to our readers?   I want you to know the real ME.  The one that is happy sometimes, excited sometimes, worried sometimes, upset and mad sometimes etc., and trying to be faithful at all times to the One that matters the most to me.

If you are still here with me, thank you for hanging in there.  I know this post is a bit "different", but is very important to me.  Thank you for those of you that are faithful readers.  I treasure all of you so much.  I look forward to hearing how I can improve my little spot on the world wide web.

Have a safe and happy long weekend, for those that get it.  :)

Hugs and love from STILL hot and dry Texas,

Hey Carolyn!

I love to read about what you are stitching, sewing, etc. It's always to hear about family too and your little buglets.

I am happy to read about your days and doings!

I like giveaways, but like you, not if there are ten hoops to jump through. I also am not a fan of blogs that do like 3 giveaways every single week...it ends up being too much for me to keep up with and seems like the only reason they blog is to get free stuff.

I like photos on blogs. I usually don't read much or at all if there are no pictures.

Guest posts sometimes are okay, I prefer a tutorial with it.

Just my thoughts, take 'em or leave 'em. :)

First, personally I think you are the only one that matters if you are happy with your blog.
*I enjoy giveaways - both entering them and having them. However, I don't like having to become a follower just to enter. 9 time out of 10 you will pick up new followers without the requirement. I have not entered some giveaways for the sole reason that they required me to be a follower.
*I either don't read or just skim a blog post that has a guest speaker unless it's really something I'm interested in.
*It's always fun to hear about your personal life but I probably enjoy a mix of personal and craftiness
*Pictures are what usually lure me in. Even if it's just a cute picture of a puppy or a cat. Something to attract my interest.
*I would much rather have you be yourself than try to be someone that is only pleasing everybody else. Let us see the real you!
*I personally make a point to answer each and every comment that is left on my blog - unless I'm having a giveaway and then that doesn't count. Everybody likes to know that you have read what they say, even if you just respond with Thanks.
Okay, that was way too many opinions from me. But you asked so I shared.
Have a wonderful weekend!!

First I like your blog, I also like giveaways (do some people really not like them!?!?) I don't like having to become a follower as I want to follow because I like you, not because I have to, I haven't entered some giveaways because of this. Secondly yes I like guest speakers as a new quilter I love tutorials. Your blog sucks NO NO NO I am only joking. Thirdly I love to hear about other people and their family, but I don't want the blog to be more of that and less of quilting, it's the quilting I am interested in, but I think telling us about family helps the friendship grow. Fourthly, I do like to see pictures, but again not over kill. Fifthly yep I like a natter with a cuppa over the kitchen table. Now one thing that does bug me a bit is if the only time someone comments on my blog is if I comment on their blog. Personally I am not bothered about where people quilt, you can quilt in the garage or garden shed it doesn't really matter, I would rather see the quilts. Hope that helps and can I now have a big slice of chocolate cake to go with the cuppa. Linda x

I love giveaways, who doesn't like winning things? I will not jump thru hoops or ask my readers to jump thru hoops. I also require those entering my giveaways follow my blog. These giveaways are a perk of following me, but I will never have more than 2 ways to enter; 1 to answer a question (it will never be to tell me if you are a follower) and the second will usually be something about the giveaway sponsor. I also don't believe in giving someone an extra entry for spreading the word bait my blog, I just ask that they do and just asking has gotten the word around, kinda like ask and you shall receive theory. So that's my take on giveaways.
As for personal things on blogs, I tend to just skim thru them, but that's the kind of person I am. When I'm in the mood I might read some of them, it just depends on my mood. I also don't write much personal stuff on my blog, mainly because my kids don't want to be on my blog, lol.
What's the most important thing about why I blog is not to have hundreds and thousands of followers, but I like connecting with others who enjoy the same things I do. I love getting comments and answer them all, which lately turns into a few more emails back an forth. That's where I get the most happiness about blogging from.
Great post btw...it's going to be interesting to read other comments.

Hi Carolyn,
What part of Texas are you from? I'm also from Texas and am suffering through the drought with you. I'm from far west Texas and also have property in South Texas. Hot and dry.
The things I like in a blog are:
1- giveaways
2- tutorials
3- I like to read about what other quilters are working on and enjoy the pictures. I don't enjoy reading really long blogs (like the one you had today) but I still waded through it because I could tell you were sincere in wanting to learn what others are interested in reading in a blog.

Hi, Carolyn! I agree with Stray Stitches - which is another reason why her blog is one of my favorites! Looks like TX is going to miss out on some of the rain from Lee. :( I wouldn't even complain about rain this holiday weekend!

The first thing that get's my attention is the title of the post. I have to get past that first. Then I like to see pictures of course. Tutorials and giveaways are wonderful. I love to learn. Patterns to be shared are wonderful bonuses.. who doesn't want a pattern?? Happy thoughts are always nice to share... it makes for a happy day for everyone. These are just my thoughts. I always think myself that I have nothing of interest to say :) LOL.

My favorite blogs are those where the writers are not afraid to just be themselves - let your personality and life shine through. Whether or not you share the good and bad, or just the good is all up to you.

I have to answer yer and no to everything you asked. I like giveaways, for the reason you mentioned but I won't work too hard for them. I like information, tutorials, tidbits, personal things. I actually like fewer pictures and more info, but I like to see projects. I would love to see you sewing space and hear how you organize. I have gotten some really useful ideas from blogs. I like your blog. Please keep it up.

Hi,
I love to read blogs. Like them to be somewhat short not really a novel. Don't mind learing a little about you and your family. A little goes a long way. Like giveaways, just want to post a comment and that't it. Like pictures but don't always need them. I know we all have our bad days but one blog started using foul language so I stopped following. It really is about what you like and how much you want to tell.

Hi Carolyn,

The variety of blogs out "there" is so vast. if you pick a topic and do a search you can come up with a blog. I read blogs and put them on my favorites if I can identify with the author in some way. If the topic is of interest - sewing, family, faith, friendship, inspirational. I like learning and seeing how someone did something. Giveaways are alright but I don't enter as half the time I don't "qualify." I don't like loops/hoops. Just be yourself! If you format your blog to what's out there-just so peeps will read or visit...then who is Carolyn??? I like your blog. You have a nicely design blog. If you change to please or to get readership, good chance of those that you try to cater to, don't visit anyway or if they do visit, they don't remark or comment. Again, be yourself. :) Abbie

Hi there, gf! I love to read about all sorts of things on blogs. Of course, I like stitching and other crafts but I also like to hear about what's going on in people's lives. I do love a post with good pics but I certainly don't not read one because it doesn't have any.

I like giveaways but I won't go thru multiple steps to enter one, most likely.

I like guest posts. Allows me to find someone new, perhaps. If I don't like what I see or read, I move on.
But I have found some new blogs that way.

Boy! What else did you ask? I have the attention span of a gnat sometimes.

But, you know I love your blog (and you, too)!

Hi Carolyn--

I'm pretty new to your blog but I'll put in my 2 cents worth.

I like giveaways, who doesn't. I especially like the ones that just ask for a comment.

Guest speakers are nice, and guest tutorials are great.

I love glimpes into bloggers lives, it's like getting to know them and becoming friends. But I also like to see the creative crafty things people do. And I really like tutorials.

Pictures are nice, some bloggers have alot, some just a few. Doesn't make that big of a difference to me.

It's nice to connect and become friends.

Looking forward to getting to know you better.

I like giveaways, I like pictures but will read without too - after all, I post once in awhile without pictures. I don't mind personal info - in fact I think it helps us get to know one another on a deeper level that just our stitching/quilting. I have used recipies from other blogs (not food blogs either) and have read many a good book mentioned on a stitching/quilting blog.

Finally, your blog is your blog. I get a little snarky on mine once in awhile. I don't use a ton of profanity but I type a word or two when warrented. But I figure if I don't like what I am reading on someone's blog, I won't visit it...but there are tons of other blogs to visit - and likewise, there are tons of people to read mine...

Have a great weekend!

Denise said...

I love pics - but I still read if there aren't any. Oh, craft rooms and organization make me all shades of happy!

But, what I like most is getting to know someone new - including their family and things going on. And the stitching that's just the bonus!

Giveaways are nice but that's just stuff - I like people.

Hi Carolyn. Love, love, love giveaways. What's not love winning free sewing goodies?! I don't necessarily think requiring folks to be a follower should be necessary (just my opinion). I also love tutorials. Sooo, guest speakers gets my A+ (for what it's worth, LOL). It's helpful to see how others accomplish sometimes simple tasks, sometimes astonishing tasks. I almost always come away having learned something new. Your family info is entirely up to you. With internet insecurity what it is, I'm always a little leary of putting too much info out there. Love pic - love to see what others are making and I frequently draw inspiration from bloggers' pics. Soooo, do you like coffee cake, or brownies??

Julie said...

My two cents? Take a deep breath, blow it out, repeat, and then do whatever YOU want to with YOUR blog. It really is all about you and that's the way it should be. Try to keep everyone else happy and it will no longer be YOU. :)

natalyK said...

I think blogging should be about what you want to share with your readers. What you enjoy and how you enjoy doing it. Your faithful readers will follow no matter what. I enjoy giveaways and seeing peoples crafty ideas but I am also willing to listen(or read) to a rant. Sometimes there are people going through the same things you are going through and may find your experience useful.

Marcia W. said...

I like giveaways that only require one comment and no follows. I already follow you so requiring that is OK. A few photos are OK, too many and the pages don't load well over dial-up. No pictures are OK when is a short message. Since I write like I talk, you are just fine in your writing. I like quilty things - some tutorials, not too many guest posts as come to read what you wrote. Light on the family posts - buglets preferred as I like kids. Responses - not necessary unless I ask a real question (and then I usually hunt the blog email and send offline). You are busy. I am busy with overflowing inbox.
I keep returning to your blog so you are doing a lot of things well.

Barbara said...

Thellie, I feel blogs are for what "you" want to talk about. If the readers aren't interested, they just move on to the next paragraph or picture.
And always remember, I love you just the way you are.......

Hi Carolyn,

I enjoy your blog, and read it faithfully, altho I don't often comment.

I will be interested to hear what your readers say about posts with no pictures. This is what slows down my blog posts as well. I feel like I need a few pictures to go along with my post.

I enjoy the giveaways, altho, I've only won like 2 in my life.

I enjoy your organizing pictures, it is inspiring to see what you do. It gives me ideas. :)

Thanks.

I enjoy your blog and I would love to see how you organize your sewing room. I guess you could call me an organizing freak as well. :) I like pictures, guest speakers and tutorials. It is fun getting to know someone and about their family. I also enjoy giveaways. Like you, I like getting things in the mail. :)

Sarah W. Benson said...

You are inquisitive! Okay, here goes. My purpose in following a blog is an interest in the subject. I WILL NOT continue reading if the blogger is a terrible writer; (bad grammar, and sentences made of empty words that say nothing ... oh and bad spelling.) Typos don't usually bother me unless they made the blog unreadable.

Like many others, give-aways are nice but no one wants to jump through 10 hoops to enter. If it is necessary to become a follower, I only do so if interested in the subject of the blog.

An occasional anecdote or comment about your family is nice because it does help your readers to get to know you. Basically my interest is in anything that involves fabric, needles, thread, yarn, etc. If you have pictures that relate to what you're saying, they are nice but you need not include a picture of a frog because your subject is about green fabric.

Finally, I have just been asked to blog, (mostly about counted cross stitch), for a new website that is to be launched as soon as the content is ready. Therefore I would be interested to know about any feedback you receive from your readers whether it is positive or negative.

Your blog is one of the few that I read regularly for two reasons; it is interesting and I get reminders of your posts via email.

I enjoy reading your blog. Giveaways? I do not like them. Some blogs I see have nothing to offer but that and I already have more "stuff than I will ever use.
Guest speakers are good if they have a tutorial. I like pictures of projects and family. Just don't make it to long, I have many blogs to read before I go to bed for the night.

I love givaways, I am having one myself at the moment but it seems to be going down like a lead balloon. So maybe you are right, a lot of people dont like them.
But I will always continue to enter.
I also love to read on blogs about the owner and what they are up to in their lives and that they talk as if they are talking to me on the phone or over a cup of coffee.
I do like to see pics but it doesnt stop me reading if there arent any.

Caren said...

It sounds like we'd be good friends, you and me! Stitching, new fun crafty ideas...oh I wish I lived closer! The main reason I read your blog is to get ideas. Ideas on crafty stuff and organization. I like to get to know you - personality comes through when you're blogging (whether you like it or not!), so that is a good thing! I also like giveaways - especially if they are from other crafty folks that have other crafty blogs or shops I can gain inspiration from! (So yes, I do like guest posts or reviews but I'm like you - I love tutorials!!!). Pictures? Yes, pictures help, 'specially for my ''give me ideas" surfing - but I like it when "meet the kids/pets/friends" posts are full of fun crafty projects they're involved in :) Aack! I'm talking your ear off!!! I think I'll stop now and go get some coke :)

Donna said...

The thing is: you can't please everyone. Your own personality needs to shine through. I personally like a smart a** comment occasionally. LOL Plus, I like a little window into other people's lives.

A few photos are nice. But, I know what you mean about not posting because you don't have a photo. But, then, I almost didn't read this post because it had no photo. I enjoy more photos of projects and not a lot of photos of vacation trips all on one post. Some people love animal photos. I do, too. But, I cringe when I see a pet on a quilt. Everyone is different.

Giveaways are nice on occasion, but after a while, not worth having to sign up to follow that many blogs.

I love, love tutorials. Any time-savers or technigues are wonderful. Enjoy seeing how others organize their stash. I also like to check out blog lists. I might come across one that I like and never would have found otherwise. And, not every blog I view has to be about quilting.

I enjoy reading your blog.
1. Who doesn't like the idea of winning something? Of course we'd all like to be the one to win the GoBaby!, but to me it's overkill to give people 10 chances to win to try and get the word out there. Its like punishing people who chose not to be on FB or Twit or blog. And requiring a person to follow is kind of silly - I have also found that I've followed blogs on my end (they are on my Google Reader like I'm a follower) and found that for whatever reason (Google Reader/Blogger issue) I didn't appear to really follow the blog.
2. Guest speakers are hit and miss for me too. I do like the variety and yeah, when they bring a tutorial it's more enticing.
3. I really do enjoy hearing about personal lives and seeing how others are making it. It kind of makes it "real". I don't enjoy those that are real whiners or use it to slam folks, but I guess that's freedom of speech.
4. I am a visual person, so pictures are definitely important to catch my eye - even if it's something that is just a something copied from the internet. That being said, I do still scan it to see if it's something I'd be interested in reading if it doesn't have pictures.
5. I'd like you to say whatever you're comfortable in saying. It's funny I was just thinking about this when I was playing on Facebook's Status Shuffle . There are things I think is funny and would like to post as my status, but because I've got such a mix of friends (including my mom), I usually don't. I'm a smart axx but I'm also overly sensitive not wanting to offend anyone. One of those personality tests called me a Smoother, which basically tries to make everyone happy. Anyhoo - I think if you want to say/share something smart axx then you should do just that. Just be aware that something could get way blown out of proportion - such as "there are things I shouldn't say".
I think you have a life - and it includes blogging, so reading your readers comments is important. I also think it's important to reply to those that leave a comments - except I don't expect them when my comment is just something like "great job" or looks nice" or when there are 1200 comments for a giveaway. I wish there was a way for the bloggers to always see the "like" buttons like on Facebook and Google Reader. I don't always have a comment, but I "Like" a lot of the things I read.
Sorry, didn't mean to write so much.
Keep up the great work. I think it's wonderful for you to share so much and enjoy it.
Take care!

Carolyn I can't answer all your questions but here are a few thoughts. I love giveaways but simple ones...be a follower, yes, but Facebook, twitter, etc. and I skip that one. I will read posts without pictures and don't mind that at all. In fact, I love pictures but wish that tutorials also had just the instructions added maybe at the bottom. Once I've read through and seen the pics I just need measurements in a place/way that I can print them. I don't mind guest writers occasionally but I come to hear about you and I love, love to see sewing rooms and organizational tips. We all have down days...tell me about yours and I'll pray for you. Then I'll tell you about mine so you can pray for me! Blessings, Marlene

Carolyn. I think ur questions are the same ones we all ask ourselves about our blogs. My biggest is "am I talking to myself?" hahaaa. Personally I love crafting reading, tutorials, and will usually click on crafty links. I know people write their blogs for their families to follow say along with grandjids that are far away and that's great. Sometimes I skim those posts. Not becAuse I don't think little Susie or Timmy isn't cute but just cuz I have 3500+ in my bloglovin reader and I'll never get to them all if I don't skim some posts. I love giveaways but HATE having to enter here, like this, etc. I just like to leave a comment that I'd love to win. If I have a giveaway. It's simple. Leave me a comment and at a certain date I'll pick a winner. I think your blog is great. I read alot of blogs but don't always comment. I'm trying to get better at that because I live comments also. Just my .02 worth :)

I have a blog monthly on www.welovequilting.com/blog

I dont make you jump though hoops. Just leave basically a comment.

I give good things away..Quilt books, art supplies, new scissors, fabric and the priority box is packed totally full. They are amazed. You know not only does it bring traffic to my site and hopefully they will stay as long as I have my blog and begin to build it, I also get to gift someone with something that I am no longer using. The books are brand new. Some never have had one pattern made from them. The magazines some are new some are old. I just fill it full with whatever I get my hands on this month and I ALWAYS GET GREAT EMAILS OF HOW THEY LOVE them give a way. I cant stand those that make you jump through hoops and you have to do this and that... not worth my effort. But if you just say leave a comment.. I 'll do it.

Hi Carolyn,
I hope I can remember all of your questions!
1. Giveaways are fun, whether I am the giver, the receiver, or knowing that someone else won.
2. I like to read about stitching, family, gardening, decorating, basically a nice mix of everything. It's nice to have a few photos, but not a necessity. I like reading about what someone else is stitching, the fabric they're using, how they finished it, etc.
3. OK, I forgot the other questions LOL I guess I'll answer a question of my own - I like to read a blog where there are frequest posts, even if they are short posts. If someone doesn't post that much, I tend to forget to keep up with their blog.

Giveaways are fun but I rarely enter - if all it takes is a comment I might but since I never win and if takes much more than that, I just don't take the time. (you see how long it has taken me to comment on this post - days!)

I like photos - not that the post has to be loaded with them
(that is okay too though) but I like at least one and I try not to make posts w/o at least one photo on my blog. (even if I have to drag out an old one and has nothing to do with the subject of the post!)

Hugs,

Carolyn, I don't think you have to change a thing - unless you just want to. I already love reading your blog. I like a blog that makes me feel happy and I think "I can't wait to see if that person has posted again". Your blog does just that and I look forward to seeing you post.

Giveaways are nice but do not determine whether I like a blog or keep me coming back.

Guest Speakers sort of bore me but I do love to hear about new blogs or other blogs of interest I can click on.

I like to hear about the person's life, their hobbies, recipes they may want to share, blogs they like, just their life in general. Sort of like chatting on the phone with a friend.

You pretty much have it all right now so why worry. Your blog is great and so are you.

I've just popped in from Bejeweled by Barb and I'm so happy I did.

I agree with alot of the comments about giveaways, I love em BUT why, if you want to have one, do we have to jump through umpteen hoops? I've overlooked many a giveaway just for this reason, it's a royal pain.

As for the way a body wants to express themself and their thoughts in blogland, it should be individual and hopefully real. What's the point otherwise? It's my choice to stay and read or take my leave.

I'm not too keen on guest bloggers for the most part unless there is an interesting tutorial.

I visit a blog to read about the person and their interests. I enjoy seeing what new projects they're involved in or have completed and often times I will be inspired.

I have signed up to follow your blog through email and look forward to reading more about you.

Have a great weekend,
Carolyn

I'm actually new to your blog via Stitchin bythelake. So here goes... Gmama always has an opinion! MY blog is small but I'm not out there for anyone else but myself. Most of my followers are quite loyal so I'm blessed with quality followers.
I like giveaways but I do think becoming a follower is only good manners if that person is going to the trouble and expense to mail something. Comment and Follow!
I do admit I like pictures and a catchy title grabs my attention. I like to read a variety of types of blogs so it's really what I'm interested in that matters.
I don't particularly like guest bloggers on personal blogs with the exception of Sew We Quilt's guest bloggers. Love that site!
If I like a particular blog, then I like reading about their family, beliefs, ups/downs, etc...I've gained some wonderful friends by reading personal info that I can identify with and pray for.
In all I think you have to be true to yourself and write what's on your heart. If you're writing for other people then is blogging really worth the time?
I do wonder if I'm talking to myself though.
Be true to YOu!
Blessings

Hi Carolyn,
First, I love your blog just as it is, and yes, I read all the way through, tho there were no pictures! LOL
I love giveaways. If there are more than one or two ways to enter, I decide for myself "do I REALLY want it" or is it not something I'm really drooling over...if I really want it then I will do all 10 things, cos I want the probability to go up, that I might win that coveted item. I don't think less of someone because they give extra entries for extra activities. I think it's nice that they are offering me extra chances.
I love to hear about family and activities. I love to see pictures, and posts about quilts in progress or finished, and organizing our space, too. And I really like blogs that are REAL -- sometimes happy, sometimes not. I think you have a great mix on your blog now! I always enjoy stopping in for that snack and cuppa, and catching up with you!
